What is dry needling?
Dry needling involves inserting very thin, sterile needles into myofascial trigger points.
- Why “dry”? Unlike injections, no medication is administered during the treatment. The therapeutic effect comes purely from the mechanical stimulation of the muscle tissue.
- Dry needling versus acupuncture: although the needles are similar, the dry needling used at Fizjo-Fan is grounded in Western evidence-based medicine – anatomy, neurophysiology and research on the musculoskeletal system.
Indications for dry needling
Dry needling works extremely well both for people with a sedentary lifestyle and for athletes with overuse injuries. We recommend it for:
- back and neck pain – cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine (sciatica, disc problems),
- tension headaches and migraines,
- overuse syndromes: tennis/golfer’s elbow, runner’s/jumper’s knee, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis,
- restricted joint mobility (frozen shoulder, hip pain),
- carpal tunnel syndrome and pain radiating into the limbs,
- scar work – to improve tissue elasticity and glide.
Does dry needling hurt?
Inserting the thin needle is almost painless. When the needle reaches a trigger point you may feel a brief, characteristic prick or a muscle twitch, followed by a sense of relief and release. After the session there may be mild soreness (as after a workout), which resolves within 24–48 hours.
What does a visit at Fizjo-Fan look like?
